Monday, March 19, 2012 Today, my FYP journey brought me to Bukit Batok Industrial Estate A where I met someone who got me thinking.I came to this company to outsource a portion of my soldering work. While it was being done, this guy who looked like a cheeky employee tryinna 'keng' invited me over to have a chat with him. He asked if I smoke, but my answer never stopped him from bringing me to the smoking point. Heh. So he asked what I was doing... And we talked. Backgrounds.. studies. So I learnt a great deal from this man. He has been to the Boys Home before for fighting. He retained in Sec 3. He retook his O levels cos all he got was E8s and F9s. Went to poly to do Civil Engineering. Went to NTU Environmental Engineering. Worked his ass off for a Second Upper. Got a job at Hyflux (3.2K) after that and even went to S. Africa to view the water treatment plant there. Left after a year as the job became more monotonous and repetitive lab work on literally shit water was not engaging him enough. So he joined Keppel. 4.5K. Within 6 months, they took him out of the Management Trainee course and made him Project Manager. Colleagues were unhappy and suspicious of course. Too much politics for him, plus working 7 day weeks and more than 12-hour shifts took its toll. Took him 9 months bonus and left. Joined this small local electronics company as a business developer. No background in that, had no clue what he was doing. Company was dying.. 700K in debt. He talked to the bosses and said if he was able to turn the company around within a year, he'll get 10% of profit sharing. Agreed. And boy he did it. With illegal paperwork here and there and lots and lots of hardwork. He started with 2.2K and now he earns 9000+ I think? or was it 7.8k? Still, within 3 years is quite an achievement. He brought them up a level. Started buying SMD machines. 600K each. Won a contract with ST SATCOM worth 13million. Enough to last the company another 3uea Hires his own people. Expecting a kid on the way. General Manager at 30 (1983). One can dream. Wished me his best as I left, and handed me his name card. "Call me if you're looking for a job." |
